Day 209/23. Merdon Castle

Merdon Castle is an old Circular Late Bronze Age or Early Iron Age earthwork with remains of Norman tower structure and length of curtain surviving as flint core work.
The castle was built sometime in the c12th probably in the late 1130’s by Henry de Blois, brother of King Stephen and Bishop of Winchester.
There is not much of it left now, but the site is being cleared and is now under the managmeent of English Heritage.  (Flown with landowners permission)
