Empowering Art

We were in Norwich to see an exhibition of Indigenous Art from the Pacific Northwest. I was seriously impressed. The Sainsbury Centre has a very good collection, and they brought in other pieces from relatively nearby (Ipswich of all places), plus a few from the Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver.

They didn’t shy away from the horrors of colonial policies such as residential schools. There was a quote in particular that stopped me in my tracks. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Indigenous peoples had an oral culture where stories were passed down from generation to generation. “Smallpox running through our people can be likened to a fire burning a library of 300,000 books. Our elders are our books of knowledge.” (Kil’iljuss Barb Wilson, 2009)

I have included a description in the extras of the main blip. I’ve also included an alternative to the BC provincial flag. The sun is setting on the British empire.
