Down memory lane...Local Hero
We had a special reason to see Local Hero, the award winning film from 1983 this evening.
My cousin, Tony, owned the land that gave access to Arisaig beach, on the west coast of Scotland, on which it was filmed.
For years he dined out on the story of how he extracted money from the film company by refusing to move his fishing nets until a substantial amount of money had been transferred into his bank account. The production company had assumed it would be free.
How did he do it? Well Tony was always a bit of a hustler. In his previous life he had worked for a big chemical company “ down south” then decided to move to Scotland and become a fisherman after his marriage broke down.
Never one to miss an opportunity Tony had befriended a senior BBC executive who happened to have a holiday cottage in the area. So when the film crew arrived Tony rung up his contact who told him what to do and to insist he would not move his fishing nets until the bank confirmed the money was in the bank.
This photo was taken of us on Arisaig beach during one of our visits to Tony.
PS We never did discover how much he was paid
