Inspired by a gravestone in St Mary’s churchyard.

Most of the stones I looked at simply recorded a name, age and date of death. This one has a very sad story to tell;

“Erected by subscription in memory of John Gill late stationmaster Windermere who died December 11th 1860 aged 30 years. Also Ann his daughter who died March 19th 1862 aged 8 months”

Baby Ann was conceived not long before John died. Her poor mother lost a partner and a baby. How did she cope?
