Life in a Northern Town

Barbie

So we went to see it.

It was amusing, I absolutely love America Ferrera but I wasn't sure really what was going on with her story arc, her very moving monologue aside. There was no resolution to her story, which was disappointing.

It felt like Ken got the only properly rounded storyline - also disappointing, although Ryan Gosling did an excellent job.  We never really understood Barbie - it was never really explained why (spoiler alert) she wanted to become human, other than perhaps to have a real vagina, which feels very reductive!

It had lots of potential, lots of humour, but in the end it didn't really say anything, and everything went back to the way it was. I am sure it had to be that way for the movie even to be made, and it's ruffling a few feathers in some places around the world as it is.

But I'd definitely recommend seeing it if you are undecided.
