Orphan Rock

My Friday morning walking partner and I found our way to Orphan Rock Lookout above the Jamison Valley today. This is part of yet another recently upgraded tourist precinct, about 30 minutes drive from Evans Lookout. Given the nature of my last few blips, I shall not bore you with the details on this occasion.

You get to this secluded spot via a sort of natural tunnel/grotto. Of chief interest here is a sandstone monolith called Orphan Rock (just to the right of Steve) which was once even more highly promoted as a tourist attraction than the Three Sisters are today. At one point a lot of money was spent to establish walking paths, lookouts and climbing stairs to enable casual visitors to experience it more fully.

Alas there were frequent accidents over the years. At one time it was even suggested that the entire structure might collapse, such that in 1974, public access to the rock was completely banned.
