In praise of Blue

We have been intending to come up to Holly for the last few weekends, but the weather and other commitments have put us off. Yesterday we bit the bullet, despite the weather forecast.

We decided to visit Carlisle Cathedral this afternoon - I am really glad of the blue badge car parking spaces, which make a visit possible.

It is almost England’s smallest cathedral, but ancient with a fascinating history and architecture. The blip image is the barrel ceiling above the Choir. It is medieval in construction, with the bright colour scheme devised in the mid 19th century, and repainted in the 1970’s. Below the ceiling can be seen the clerestory, which is apparently early 14th century.

Our visit took a little longer than anticipated. Carlisle FC were playing Fleetwood at home, and as our route took us past “the Blues” stadium progress was a little slow. A big match in these parts, the team clearly has a lot of local support.
