Monday: Pretty In Pink

We’ve been building up to a Pride event which we held today.  Celebrating Pride and the LGBTQ community is not the easiest thing in Belize.  People are either overtly hostile, or not that comfortable being seen as supporters.  Those that are willing to show up are definitely in the minority.

Our original intention was to have an event for about 40.  To get that number you have to invite about double, as there is usually a 50% or so attrition rate.  So imagine our surprise when more people than expected started saying yes, and then asking if they could bring people.  So we ended up with about 80 which exceeded all our expectations.

We only had two negative reactions.  Someone’s driver walked out because he didn’t approve, and one of the servers we’d hired said he wouldn’t work the event as he hadn’t realised what it was.  But those were small glitches.

It was great to see.  The dress code was ‘bright’ - my colleagues, Cuffa, Mel and Ashanti definitely got that memo.  I’ve added an extra of the cake.

We had the obligatory after party in the kitchen which was a good laugh.
