Forewarned Is Forearmed

Our speaker today, at the village Social Club was David Shaw who spoke to us about The Royal Observer Corps.


This was something I knew absolutely nothing about. It was begun in 1570 when Sir William Brooke, a friend of Queen Elizabeth I, saw a need for the protection of the country. Hence a combination of observance and warning beacons was established.

Recognition of aircraft was crucial and some of the highest volunteers were chosen who could recognise photos of just parts of planes shown to them for a tenth of a second. Their work resulted in the capture and identification of Rudolf Hess when his plane crashed.
