Upgrade

I love this Maglite 2D.  It has been many places and done many things with me over more than 25 years - mostly backstage or doing security at theatres and nightclubs.  Sometimes spotlighting troublemakers from a balcony so security on the floor could get to them and deal with them!  It has a variety of dents acquired in a variety of ways...

It was a beast of a light when I bought it, but lately it's output has been eclipsed by cheap LED torches so it has sat unused.  Today I fitted it with an LED upgrade, and it once more has beast status.  The LED works very well with the tight beam - when I adjust for a wider wash there is a dark spot in the middle that is more pronounced than with the old bulb.  Still, this is definitely a new lease of life for it. 

Interestingly the vertical stripes in the beam that appear in this image aren't visible to the naked eye.  This must be to do with the way the LED is modulated (most LEDs are pulsed to some extent rather than continuously driven), and the line scan rate of the camera is freezing these peaks and troughs of brightness.
