This quick snap with my iPhone sums up most of today - clocking up tolls on empty motorways across the seemingly endless plains of Northern France. I took the photo as we were coming into Picardie. It's difficult to imagine these lush fields basking in the warm sunshine being pulverised by artillery and barbed wire. One day I would to stop off here as well and tour the First World War memorials. I remember my grandfather talking about the Battle of the Somme and Ypres...
