Puts You There Where Things Are Hollow
On This Day In History
1952: Hound Dog is recorded for the first time by Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton
Quote Of The Day
On being asked how she felt about being paid $100 for Hound Dog and Elvis earning millions for it:
"I'm still here to spend my 100 bucks."
("Big Mama" Thornton)
So far as I know, there are no statues of "Big Mama" Thornton in existence.
Fortune and fame does not always bring happiness, as Elvis' life and death illustrate fairly clearly, I would say. Unfortunately, relative obscurity and poverty don't bring happiness either, as "Big Mama" Thornton's life and death also illustrate fairly clearly.
No fatuous moral lessons here, I’m afraid.
