Stepping Out
We finally stepped out of our rut, and guess where we went? Right…to see the Barbie movie. What’s John doing there? Well I dragged him more or less kicking and screaming using the excuse that we were meeting Kathy and Mike. We were sitting in the lobby with our popcorn and coke waiting for them when John suddenly piped up with, ‘this is fun!’ I refrained from reminding him that I had threatened
and bribed him into going…and he did wear his pink and blue shirt.
That was worth the effort by itself.
I have lots of thoughts about the movie but I will mention just two. First, it was great fun and wonderfully produced. Second, when a movie gets so overhyped it is almost impossible for it to live up to the hype, but I did enjoy it and if it gets John into a discussion it gets extra points. I wish they hadn’t made the men look so feckless….
I was definitely pre-Barbie, and by the time Dana came along she wanted nothing to do with dolls, so we never had Barbie under our roof, but I was aware of all the criticisms of her and tended to agree with them. I couldn’t imagine how they would make a decent movie about a popular toy, even one that has survived for 60 years…Greta Gerwig not only came up with a clever idea, she made a movie which has become something of a cultural phenomenon.
On a more mundane level, it has been very hot and humid today. Heat we are used to. Humidity not so much. Going to a matinee on a hot day isn’t a bad way to beat the heat, but from the look of the audience one has to be over 65 to go to a matinee. Worked for us.
Now I must figure out dinner…popcorn was almost enough, but not quite….
