Life in a Northern Town

Huddersfield A - Z - Scammonden Dam

Scammonden Dam was built as part of the construction of the M62, to form an embankment for the motorway and create a reservoir to supply Huddersfield. The dam was built from material excavated elsewhere along the motorway, and the Deanhead Valley, including the village of Deanhead, was flooded.

The bridge that you can see crossing the motorway, Scammonden Bridge, (go large) was once the longest single-span non-suspension bridge in the world, and is still the longest concrete arch bridge in the UK. Sadly it's a notorious suicide spot.

A great place to walk, if you don't mind the traffic thundering along - in places you are only a few feet away from the motorway, quite disconcerting.

I had a fab walk there today with the dog, whom I let off the lead experimentally. She was in the water faster than you can say Tom Daley, then set off on the sand at full pelt. Happily, as I am no Usain Bolt, she came back (eventually).

What a glorious day!

Tempted by the Dambusters theme, or The Damned, but settled on this.
