Nene

The Hawaiian Goose, also known as the Nene, evolved from the Canada Goose which most likely arrived on Hawaii shortly after it was formed around 500,000 years ago.

Numbers plummeted due to hunting and predators, and it was on the verge of extinction. To save them, they were bred in captivity by Sir Peter Scott at WWT Slimbridge and reintroduced to Hawaii over 50 years ago. There are now over 2000 of them in their native home.

This photo was taken at WWT Martin Mere on a wet, dismal day.
