Duncan' s Land
A shot of the lintel above the entrance to the building formerly known as Duncansland and now a restaurant known as Nok's Kitchen. The lintel was removed from elsewhere - it has an inscription which reads FEAR GOD ONLYE followed by the initials I G in monogram, the date 1605 and the initials I R. To the left is a merchant's mark.
Extra Photo:
The exterior of the whole building (shot on 15/8 and it appears as the photo for that day) - this is a former merchant's house built about 1790 from the stones of demolished buildings in the Old Town.
It was the birthplace of the artist, David Roberts (1796-1864), who worked as a scene painter at Edinburgh's Theatre Royal and London's Covent Garden. In 1830, he was appointed President of the Society of British Artists. During the following decade he toured the Far East, producing a celebrated series of paintings of Egyptian scenes and antiquities. He was a Commissioner of the Great Exhibition of Industry and Arts in 1851.
