A day at the tennis
Thursday 17 August
This week is the Western and Southern Open tennis tournament up the road in Mason, which attracts a lot of the big names as a warm up for the upcoming New York Open. We had tickets for Centre Court from 11am till 5pm, and this also allows you into the other courts open seating all day. The tournament is shorter than the grand slams, and so the men only play the best of 3 sets rather than five. First up, we saw Medvedev play Zverev on Grandstand court, which went to three sets, Zverev winning, and the other major one we saw was Carlos Alcaraz playing American Tommy Paul, which also went to three sets, two of them decided by tie breakers. Unfortunately, the rain interfered at this point, and we waited around for a while and enjoyed a delicious Graeters ice cream, but in the end we returned home, without seeing the last couple of games, in which Alcaraz won. It was a somewhat disappointing end to the day, as previously we have stayed until late, and seen more games. However, it was probably just as well, since we were still on English time, and I was already beginning to feel tired when we got home around 7pm! Unfortunately, I have just discovered the new owners of the tournament, are considering moving it to Charlotte North Carolina, which would be really sad. Apparently the two cities are trying hard to win! Personally I’d have thought it makes more sense in Ohio - it is more central and has a greater population area to pull on. I guess time will tell!
My collage shows Medvedev and Zverev on the top, and Alcaraz on the bottom.
