During a walk on moorland, among the tiny bluish black blaiberries (bilberries) were many pinkish-white flowers of the cowberries which normally flower earlier in the summer. They develop into shiny red edible berries and also known as lingonberries or mountain cranberries (Vaccinium vitis-idea) The berries are common on moors and woodland in parts of northern England and Scotland and in northern Europe. In the Baltic countries they are often used to make lingonberry jam, smoothies or as an accompaniment to meat dishes.
Extra We also saw some lizards beside the footpath but I use the flowers for the final week for Miranda’s Wild flower challenge of the year.
