In flight
The male common darter has been guarding the pond for a week or so now, in the hope that a female will come along to enable him to pass on his genes. I've been hoping to catch him in flight but he doesn't tend to hover much.
Instead he perches on a leaf waiting for a foolish little flying insect to pass by, when he launches himself into the air and that's the end of that insect. The darter resumes his place on the leaf and chews steadily for a few minutes. Meanwhile the Blipper curses another missed opportunity.
But not this time.
