Swing batter batter, swing
Lovely day today which started off well with good meetings in Des Moines and then some time on the road as I headed north and west. On the way I called in at Kelloggs, the birth place of John Wayne, Madison County to see some bridges and then Omaha, Nebraska and north to Sioux Falls. After quick snaps of the falls themselves I discovered that there was a baseball field having a game next to my hotel, so took a wander over. The "Birdcage" home of the Sioux Fall Canaries was hosting Winnipeg.
Unfortunately it wasn't a good night for the Canaries as Winnipeg took them apart but the crowd were great and people really friendly. Visiting the game really showed me what cheer leading and the buzz around American sports are about. When its done by the large corporations and major league teams, it is awful and tacky. But a bunch of pre-teens doing a dance, local kids on the field doing the YMCA and three legged race and it is quaint and fun and just part of a lovely community. This kind of thing doesn't scale up.
