Today's plan was to take Arachne to see the Higgins and then perhaps, afterwards, go and listen to Bedford Town Band play at the bandstand in the meadows if the weather wasn't unkind. We arrived at the Higgins a few minutes before opening time, which allowed us a chance to go and look at what remains of the castle – only a handful of stones with the power to tell a gripping story.
Somehow we had both misread the time and were still an hour too early, so went off around Bedford some more to see what we could find from the time during the war when Bedford was the secret home of British broadcasting. Not a lot to see when the main church (Studio 6) is closed on Sundays (!?!)
Killed some more time in T K Maxx where I fell in love with a couple of rugs I don't need and bought them anyway. Then the Higgins, then the bandstand, then home.
This rug said it shouldn't be placed on top of existing carpet as the colours might transfer. Well I don't want to upset my lovely landlord here, especially since he had this flat recarpeted for me when I moved in. So nothing for it but to put it in the bathroom.
Well! It couldn't have been a better fit if it had been made for it.
