My 400th roller coaster
Backblip 2/3.
We got up and went to Six Flags Great Escape, which has six roller coasters. One coaster, Alpine Bobsled, is closing for good on Sept. 4. When the news was announced a few weeks ago, we decided to visit to try to ride.
We rode three other coasters at the park and then we went to Comet, a classic wooden coaster that opened here in 1994. Comet opened at another park, Crystal Beach in Canada, in 1948 and operated until that park closed in 1989. It was sold at auction and moved to Great Escape in 1993.
Before that, its station and much of the support structure was used for Cyclone, one of the most famous coasters ever built. Crystal Beach's Cyclone was a twisted coaster without a single section of straight track. It had steep dives, track and banked left and right quickly, and ground-level turns. It had a nurse stationed at the exit. It operated from 1926-1946.
Comet was a really fun ride and easily the best coaster at the park. We rode it five times. We kept looking at the app and the entrance of Alpine Bobsled, but it never opened. It's a bobsled coaster with a trough for a track. If it's wet, the coaster can't operate. It rained several times today. We're trying again tomorrow before we drive home.
