Hohentwiel Fortress Ruins
Thanks to the beautiful late summer weather, we decided to go for a bike ride across the border today. We got across the lake to Germany easily with the midday boat and cycled to the Hohentwiel ruins.
It's a once-invincible fortress, the ruins standing on a large rocky outcrop (see extra), one of the many bizarre volcanic formations of the Hegau region. See here for more information and the history of the fortress.
A detail on an information sign:
"In the cellars of the upper fortress, no less than 109,000 litres of wine were stored in 1628. However, in view of the 120 or so men and their families and their considerable consumption of alcohol, this was not a very large supply."
