Magnificent Men

Magnificent men in their flying machines were based at Fraserburgh Airfield from 6th December 1941 until the end of the War. Known locally as Inverallochy Airfield it was largely used for reconnaissance and training purposes though Air Sea Rescue  support was provided for planes from Banff attacking the U boats off the Norewgian coast. During Operation Tindall in the summer of 1943, decoy plywood aircraft and a dummy encampment were placed round the Airfield to create the impression to enemy spotter planes that an invasion of Norway was imminent. Similar tactics were employed in 1944 before the Allied invasion of Europe. Towards the very end of the war on 5th May 1945 an enemy aircraft surrendered and landed at Fraserburgh.

Expansion of the village of Inverallochy, where this memorial stone is situated, and agriculture have  largely obliterated the runways but the remains of  some of the Airfield buildings remain and are still visible.
