Skyhawk
I've taken many versions of this shot before, but the thing that is unique about it is the fact that those clouds, very rare at this time of year, actually contain rain, even more unusual. It is so much cooler, and it has been so long since Spike had more than a short, basic walk, that we decided we would risk a cloudburst and take him up to his favorite meadow. The goats had been there and cleared away the last of the tall grass, and the view over the community of Skyhawk where Jim and Dana live was pleasant.
The large roofs at the front edge of Skyhawk are those of Spring Lake Village, a continuing care community which is identical to Canterberry Woods near Monterey, where my mother lived for the last ten years of her life. John and I have agreed that we should go and talk to them as it is a pleasant place with lots of amenities, but it may have gotten so expensive since my mother lived in the sister facility (identical architecture) that we can't afford it!
Deciding to talk to them and actually doing it are also two very different things.
I was pleased that I managed the Spike Walk with very little problem and we got back to the car before the clouds burst (briefly). After lunch, John, surprisingly, announced that he was going to lie down saying he was cold and tired. Entertaining thoughts of Covid, which is still around and being brought to our attention by constant reminders to stay up to date on our vaccinations, even though this is a new variant for which a vaccine is not yet available, I worked on the latest quilt. John and I have decided not to get another bivalent shot as it doesn't seem to be very effective against this variant, and hold out for the new vaccine. Typically, the promised date of its release keeps changing. We're trying not to become complete hermits again, while we wait, just as we were beginning to venture out again.
John got up from a two hour nap, pronounced himself fine (once he had spent another half hour trying to wake up) and went outside to dig in the dirt. I made chicken broth out of a chicken carcass and a bag full of vegetable trimmings that I have been dutifully saving in the freezer. It occurred to me that I still had to throw away everything after I strained it out of the broth, but I guess I should get some 'no food waste' points for using them before putting them in the compost.
We'll see how the soup tastes after I put the rest of the chicken and some noodles in it.
