Family photos
I hadn't seen these friends since before Covid. I couldn't believe how much the children had matured! One of the twins, entering first grade next week, looked at the back of my camera and asked, "What does 'face detected' mean?"
My jaw dropped. Clearly, the children are precocious readers!
The parents are Bhutanese but were expelled from Bhutan because their ancestors, 200 years ago, arrived in Bhutan from Nepal. They were still practicing Hindus speaking Nepalese when the Bhutanese government decided that only Buddhists could remain in the country. (So much for the "Happiest country" reputation!) Both parents lived in refugee camps for over a decade but were eventually admitted to the USA, where they met each other. They are full citizens now, and all three children were born in the USA.
