Powis Castle

So we were all packed up and were on the road to Wales in good time, the traffic and weather were fine. We stopped in Welshpool as we needed cash for the deposit for this week's residence but had to go to a supermarket as there are no banks there.

To fill in time before arriving at the new place we visited Powis Castle, which has a long history since its C13 origin, the building itself full of quirky corners, I imagine a nightmare to arrange furniture, especially the four-posters. I loved it.

Then we wandered round the extensive garden, admiring the C17 yew topiary and Italianate terraces. Main photo from the Orangery Terrace. Extra: sundial on a terrace at the East Front of the castle, I think older than that in the Fountain Garden, though have no detail of either at present. From here I watched four young deer ( probably red, though there are fallow in the park) resting in the shade of the castle wall.

Returning to the car we aimed for our accommodation in Dolgellau, which seems very well equipped and comfortable.

Of course, we ought to be in Beaumaris on Anglesey, we had no plan to be here, but last Saturday morning (just two days before occupation) while attempting to contact them to confirm our arrival time, we received the message that it was 'no longer available', with no reason given. The agent desperately tried to find us an alternative, offered two, quite close together, ergo, both an hour's drive from our choice. However, there is no extra charge despite a higher rating.

So, here we are - at least the weather is spectacularly fine, we just have to review all the destinations on our visiting list.
