In praise of hotels with personality
Whenever we visit Blackpool we always stay at the iconic Imperial hotel. The hotel is one of the great Victorian hotels (built in 1847) that use to line many British holiday resorts in their heyday.
As ever, our stay was lovely, as the hotel delivered on all fronts and combine it with the amazing weather and what more could you want.
Unfortunately, many of them have suffered a decline over the years, primarily, as more people holiday aboard, as well as the ever increasing costs of maintaining these giant piles, especially, during straightened times.
Thankfully, the Imperial, so beloved of political party conferences past, as well as VIP guests such as Charles Darwin, Winston Churchill, Queen Victoria, The Beatles etc. has managed to survive to this day, and long may it continue to do so.
There is something special (and spectacular) about having your meals served in the recently refurbished grandiose Palm Court restaurant (see extra) and being able to listen to some evening entertainment in the giant ballroom. Yes, it may not have double glazing and has a few shabby corners, but it has so much more personality than your average Travelodge or Premier Inn.
Back home now after a very smooth and enjoyable drive back.
Hope you are having a similarly lovely day.
