Eyes Right

An overcast and gloomy sort of evening, but a bit of warm light in this direction. I was on the return leg, not having seen much of interest, when I spotted this heron in the distance.

The inlet lay between us and I thought it would not be upset if I moved closer. I kept shooting as I advanced, for insurance, but this was as close as I felt comfortable.

Exposing for the highlights means everything else is in shadow when backlit. It's tricky adjusting this type of shot to keep it looking natural.

I like how he's standing on one leg, waiting patiently. Wonder whether he sleeps like that?
