Penitentiary
Today my bosses from New York City came down to Haiti. As we were walking around the GHESKIO campus together, Dr. Johnson told me some stories about the days after the earthquake. 4,000 people from the surrounding slums came to squat on the the GHESKIO property, forcing GHESKIO to provide sanitation, security, water, food, etc.
There is a penitentiary about 1/4 mile away from GHESKIO, and during the earthquake the guards just opened up the doors of the penitentiary, releasing all of the convicts. In addition to developing the tent camp and providing medical care to the downtown Port-au-Prince population, GHESKIO had to deal with the worries associated with unidentified convicts living in and roaming around the tent camp.
