Framework Knitters Museum, Ruddington
We have made it back home after a great week away. We stopped off on the way home at this wonderful little museum in Ruddington. I wasn’t sure what to expect but the volunteers really brought the place alive.
My main shows the workshop where the frames were operated. 14 hour days six days a week in cramped noisy conditions. The operators had to rent their machines, pay for coal for heating in winter, pay for candles for lighting and pay for materials.
Mrs C and I had a go on the sock making machines. We were allowed to keep our work. Turning the handle for 15 mins was bad enough but the operators back in the the 1880s had to do this for over 12 hours.
Now to catch up on Blip which is going to take ages.
