inspiration all around us

By Marykathleen

Inspired by a hidden gem.

Attracted by the sound of logs being split with an axe, I eventually found ‘The Footprint’ in a clearing at the edge of St Catherine’s Wood, near Windermere. I discovered that the log-splitter was one of the volunteers who had built this beautifully organic structure, using the funds from a legacy to the National Trust. It has been hand crafted by volunteers using sustainable and recycled materials including straw bales, old tyres and storm damage timber from the local woods.
Echoing the Arts and Crafts philosophy from 100 years ago of simplicity and harmony with its surroundings, this is a beautiful building and I’m so pleased that I managed to find it!
