Grass-leaved Orache

The surprisingly colourful seed heads of Grass-leaved Orache Atriplex littoralis on the edge of The Wash near Holbeach St Matthew, taken on an impromptu trip to the coast to escape the Peterborough heat. It was still hot, but about five degrees cooler than inland, and with a gentle sea breeze.

We walked out along Lawyer's Creek and stumbled across a monad with no previous plant records - it didn't take long to record the rather species-poor saltmarsh - most of the monad is mud! Such a wild and lonely part of the world...

Terrific thunderstorms in the afternoon soaked the garden, but stopped in time for our family barbecue, though we did eat indoors as all the garden furniture was soaked! It definitely felt like the end of summer...
