One step at a time!

Erddig Hall

The last time we visited this National Trust property the place was crammed to the rafters with visitors. Today was a different story, we enjoyed tasty soup in the restaurant followed by a relaxed walk around the grounds.

The Erddig Estate was gifted to the NT by Philip Yorke In 1973, a gift worth around 3 million pounds. I was fortunate enough to visit the hall on many occasions during restoration works during in the 1970s. I recall that the National Coal Board paid huge sums of money to the Trust towards restoration costs. This was due to the fact that coal mining had undermined the property to such an extent that it had sunk more than three feet from one end to the other. I feel blessed to have met Philip Yorke on several occasions. He was a lovely man (if a little eccentric) he regularly rode a penny-farthing bicycle around the grounds but was always willing to stop and chat about the hall and estate.
