Porters' Stone - Leith

In trying to work out what to do with my friend T this afternoon, I discovered a walk/talk on the history of Leith as part of the Leith Festival. We heard about James IV landing at Leith, the divisions of the area, the importance of Marie de Guise and where the customs and trading took place. Apparently all the goods landed had to go up to the Tron in Edinburgh to be weighed and priced except for timber and wine. This carving on the outside wall of the Whisky Society depicts where the wine was stored after it was loaded onshore. The original carving is held in the National Museum of Scotland.

After about an hour we decided to bail out and find somewhere nice in the sun to drink coffee, and for me a wee rose. We agreed this was a most lovely way to spend a sunny Sunday in Edinburgh.
