The squirrels around here are the Fox squirrel variety, that is they are mostly reddish gray. But occasionally there are Fox squirrels that are melanistic, that is their melanin has turned them black.
I often see this one by the gate that Laney and I go through for our morning walk in the field. This morning it was willing to stick around for a few portraits.
What I noticed first was the bit of red color left in the tail. And then I saw the peppering of gray in the fur. Finally I noticed that the claws are tipped in white. Seems to me this critter had an appointment at a beauty shop!
