Another Room with a View

Smithers had an outpatients appointment with his opthalmic surgeon at 1.15 pm. The pressure was found to be up again in his eye, so we spent six hours going in and out of his consulting room between other patients, waiting for various drops and surgical procedures which were aimed at reducing it. Nothing managed to keep the pressure down, it just kept going back up again, so the only option left for the surgeon was to give him the special diuretic tablets for reducing eye pressure which were thought to be a possible cause of the previous repeated fainting episodes. The surgeon arranged for a blood test to check Smithers’ potassium levels, which were fine, so he decided to try the diuretic tablets once more, but in a very cautious dose.

At my insistence, Smithers was admitted to a hospital room so that he can be monitored while the diuretic tablets do their job. Hopefully I will sleep well tonight from the relief of knowing that he’s safe and being well cared for and, hopefully his eye pressure will be reducing.

It’s now 9.45 pm, and I’ve just returned from the hospital, having got him into his PJs and tucked into bed, with this picture on the wall facing him. It’s been another very long day.
