Rode home very gently, trying not to shoogle the bike and the above pannier much. The box fitted in, permitting the pannier to only just close around it. After looking at the photo whilst editing, I see that at least one of the pannier's fixing hooks needs to be rivetted back on properly. Luckily it didn't fall apart on the way back.
