Byrdie?
Every so often, I take my fitness walk with my younger daughter. Today, she promised not to walk too fast, so I agreed to her company, as it is always nice to have a walking partner.
When we were near her former elementary school, she wanted to stop and see the new mural that was recently completed on an exterior wall of the building. Richard E. Byrd School has always been a big "Arts" school, so we were excited to see what the artist had created.
I was shocked that is was a mosaic, which is one of my favorite visual art forms. The most amazing fact about this mural is that is was created by K-5the year grade students, with the assistance of a muralist, Kit Salier, the teachers and principal of the school, several local business owners, and even the Mayor of our town! (He made the American flag!)
So, who was Richard E. Byrd? Well, he was a U.S. Naval officer who made several expeditions to the South Pole. He was not Roald Amundsen, but earned many awards for his efforts, and died peacefully in his sleep.
Sounds pretty good to me.
