In Berlin
After the glorious weather of the last couple of days the weather front that crossed the UK a couple of days ago arrived here. A few showers but cooler so a much better day for walking. And we walked!
First, we left the hotel and headed for the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Street. Some parts of the old wall are still in existence and there were lots of excellent displays about the history of the wall and the people. I was impressed by this mural on the gable end of one of the houses next to the wall area; the inscription on the knife cutting the meat simply reads 'Berlin 1961-1989'.
Next we headed to the Bundestag where we had tickets to visit the dome. An enjoyable walk up the ramps to the top but no good if you are agoraphobic! Another interesting exhibition of the history of the German State from the 1880's up to the present day. An extra of the inside of the dome attached.
We then walked to Checkpoint Charlie where I took the second extra, taking in the Holocaust Memorial and the site of Hitler's bunker on the way. Interesting, but not much more to see than in the shot I took. There was a museum nearby but we gave that a miss. Then on to the department store 'KaDeWe' which was amazing! To say it was like a cross between Harrods and Selfridges would be understating it; I particularly liked the food area on the sixth floor where there were countless restaurants and bars serving pretty much any type of food you could imagine.
Our last night tonight but we don't fly home until early evening tomorrow so should have time to do a few things. It's the Berlin Marathon this weekend so tram and bus travel will be restricted but the underground will be running as normal.
