Everyday I Write The Book

Deer shadow …

We went to a place called Sky Park Farm today which sounds like one of those orbiting agriculture platforms in a science fiction movie. Silent Running from 1972 remains the king of the genre for me. Can’t believe it’s over fifty years old, but like a lot of old movies it had prescient vision when it came to predicting that mankind would still be making shit decisions about the planet regardless of how clever it got in the future. Rishi Sunak = Environmental Yosemite* by way of example.

Anyway they had several genus of deer including a white version and a Japanese one in segregated spacious areas which were fields rather than pens. The whole place was very well organised and the staff had all been to the Stepford School of customer care (bit unfair - they were lovely, just a bit too perfect). We over indulged in the deli and bought loads of eggs, which was why went in the first place. All a bit of a green cliche actually. We drove 50 minutes in our electric car to buy eggs from a farm where the hens roamed freely and got rehomed at the end of their lives rather than chucked into the grinder.

Having said all that I am fairly certain the cute deer end up as venison. But the entrance fee is a steal at a fiver for old people and Blue Light card holders, and the coffee and flapjacks were more than half decent,

I did manage a bit of domestic duty in the afternoon and TSM made a very nice Thai curry. So all in all it was a superior sort of day with the highlight being beautiful countryside right there at the intersection of Surrey, Hampshire and Sussex. Sunny too. Summer’s last gleaming.

For the record, deer sound a bit like cows when they give the vocal cords a bit of wellie. Well these ones did.

* Yosemite = urban slang for killer.
