to the Savelsbos

A 6 km long and narrow forest on the often steep slope (up to 125m above sea level) of the Maas valley near Maastricht. We used to walk there a lot, but we lived very close to it at the time. Now we rarely go there, but today I wanted to walk the entire length again. I looked for a nice route on Komoot and off we went. The backpacks were a bit lighter and the feet felt good.

Of course we passed well-known places. There is so much history to be found in the Savelsbos! A prehistoric flint mine, gravel quarries also used in the Roman age, limestone quarries from which in 1500 ad, blocks were taken to build a church in Maastricht and a reconstructed burial mound from the Bronze Age. We saw the latter for the first time. It turns out that the remains of 7 burial mounds have been found in 1920.

We are ready to go on our hike in a few weeks. We were able to adjust the daily distances to my capabilities.
