3rd generation wood worker
The two Morgan brothers make hand cleft wooden tent pegs, like their father, and their father's father, in the same hidden workshop in Herefordshire. The each use their own knife tool, as they each have their own 'feel', both the carving tool and the way each brother works too.
Between them, they make around 100,000 pegs each year, plus many other items. And such is the demand for their handmade pegs, they are catching up with orders.
I watched as they chopped up a slice of tree trunk into segments, cut a notch in each piece, then deftly shaped each peg to shape in seconds, all with the ease and speed of real craftsmen, learnt literally at their father's side.
And the cost of this skill? A mere 50p per peg. Truly a bargain.
