Battered and buffeted

In answer to my question last week about butterflies (see 20 September) the evidence on today’s walk is that they get up and out and fly about.

This Red Admiral landed on a hedge and rested for some time before taking off again in the blustery wind and thrown about in the air.

Whether that had caused its wings to be damaged, or because they had previously been caught on something or been attacked by a predator I don’t know. Despite the missing bits it still seemed to be able to fly.

The extra shows its wings folded at rest. I like that, on the app, it can be identified by the underside patterns as well as by the more colourful top.
