Recovering

In 2021 the forests on the hills that surround Icmeler were destroyed by wildfires which burned ferociously day after day, spreading along the coast towards the neighbouring town of Turunc.
It was absolutely heartbreaking to see this happening to a place I’ve been coming on holiday to for almost 20 years, where we have so many friends. Following the fires there were floods as the rainy season hit and there were no trees to slow the the water as it ran into the town and washed away homes and businesses in its wake. Two years on, the scars are still visible on the hills but it’s encouraging to see that where possible new trees have been planted and in other places vegetation not totally destroyed is recovering and the homes and businesses are slowly being rebuilt.
