Shelf Fungi

These are very common around here and this one is growing on the old stump in front of the house. There are always some new fungi popping up on the stump.  There are many kinds of "shelfies" (also called "bracket fungi") but I thought this one looked like a piece of ancient, cracked pottery.  We are in a streak of beautiful early autumn weather now and I am reveling in the mild temperatures, sunny days and no rain!  I took my first drive yesterday and it was so smooth and quiet!  I have several more days of "practice" until I leave for a short trip up the coast of Maine.  Gift#268: great weather ahead.
