Flashback
..to the 60's in Canada, before the pill, before legal abortion, and in the time of homes for unwed mothers that forced young women to give up their babies for adoption..to a time when the choices for pregnant women were limited...to a time I remember.
I was in high school and university in the 60's..so I am of an age to have friends and acquaintances who made the choice to give their babies up for adoption and then spent years later trying to find them. Sometimes we forget what it was like before we had choices. This book was a reminder...
To quote one reviewer.. "Looking For Jane is an ode to the doctors and nurses and volunteers who fought for the rights of future generations to have a say about their own bodies". But it is more...
As the author says in her extensive Author's Note at the end of the book..."it is about motherhood...about wanting to be a mother and about not wanting to be a mother and all the grey areas in between. It is about the lengths to which women will go to end a pregnancy or to become pregnant .. It's about women supporting each other through their individual choices and the outcomes of those choices."
Looking For Jane is the book for our next book club meeting and I think the discussion will prove to be most interesting; our ages in the group vary enough that our memories or experiences will be quite different and will probably affect how we react to the book. I look forward to that discussion.
