Last day

Today's weather was forecast to be better and it was certainly brighter, though still windy. Before we set off for the day we had a walk down on to the tiny harbour beach and along the far side, in front of the cottages mirroring ours. We had a lovely chat with a resident lady and her dog, and explored the local church.

Our first port of call was the Islay Nature Centre at Bruichladdich with its huge collection of photographs, skeletons and geological samples. Lunch today was at the local mini-market a little further along the road - I don't remember ever being served by a more po-faced woman! A total misery!!

Next on the list was Port Askaig from where we'll be leaving tomorrow. We were intending to visit Finlaggan, the island where the Lord of the Isles built his stronghold, but as it was only five minutes further to Port Askaig we pushed on to see if we could find out anything about ferry sailings tomorrow. We're booked on the 15.30, but wondered if it might be wise to go stand-by on the 10.00 instead, though the forecast did seem reasonable. The young man behind the desk rather reluctantly stopped watching a cartoon on his phone to attend to me, but wasn't very helpful. He thought there was no reason for disruption or cancellations, but I think we'll join the queue to try for the earlier one as we did coming over on Wednesday. My Blip today is of the harbour at Port Askaig with a background of the hills of the Isle of Jura opposite.

We drove down the road to Finlaggan, but unfortunately the track down to the bridge was flooded so we didn't go over to the island. The young lady in the Visitor Centre gave us a good history, so we didn't come away empty handed!

We stopped for a cuppa by the sea on the way back, and before reaching the cottage I took advantage of the sunshine to take some more Portnahaven pictures. Home tomorrow!
