Nextdoor neighbor's roof
This weekend, three large bricks from our crumbling chimney (landlord insists he has begun the process of fixing this) rolled down the roof in the middle of the night and hit theneighbor's SUV denting his hood. Woke me out of a sound sleep and scared me half to death. We're all glad no one was nearby at the time.
Our chimney is not a very interesting subject (too far away/bad angle), but I found myself staring at THIS as we ate lunch out on our tiny balcony this morning. We used to call them paper wasps because, when I was a kid we used to find pieces of their nests and they were made of paper. But after some checking on the internet, I'm convinced these are not paper wasps, but hornets (which also build paper nests).
While we were eating breakfast, a blue jay dropped by and (I kid you NOT!), flew up at the next twice, hitting it with his beak. We couldn't tell if he was trying to make a lunch of the wasps or their larva, or if he was just trying to knock the next down. Birds do the strangest things. Too bad I didn't get a picture of THAT!
