Day of German Unity

…is a holiday to commemorate the reunification of East and West G. in 1990. I’m afraid the day meanwhile is dedicated rather to private recreation than to political alertness. The blip shows a map of the country’s enormous fragmentation which lasted until 1918. Russian occupation led to the 40 years of partition (1949-1989), until the Wall came down in a moment of Russian political weakness at the end of the 1990s. (This is a page from an historical atlas my late mother-in-law had in school. Must be about 90 years old.)
